NEW DELHI: The Central Bureau Investigation (CBI) on Friday took over probe into death of Akhada Parishad president Mahant Narendra Giri who was found dead at the Baghambari Math in Prayagraj.
A five-member team of the CBI from Delhi reached Prayagraj on Thursday afternoon for a preliminary inquiry. The state government had recommended a CBI probe into the mahant’s death on Wednesday night. The demand for a CBI probe was also raised by opposition parties, including Congress and Shiv Sena.
The seer community in Haridwar had alleged that Giri’s death was the result of a “conspiracy” even as details from a suicide note purportedly handwritten by the mahant revealed that he was forced to take his own life as he was being “blackmailed” by his disciple Anand Giri over a “morphed photo with a girl”.
Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath had assured that culprit behind the death of Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad chief would not be spared.
The ABAP president was found dead under mysterious circumstances at Baghambari Math located residence on September 20. A purported suicide note was recovered from the site of the incident in which the name of the seer’s disciples, Anand Giri, and two others were mentioned.
An FIR was lodged against Anand Giri and two others under section 306 (abetment of suicide) of Indian Penal Code (IPC). Anand Giri was arrested and produced before the court of CJM on September 22, who remanded him to judicial custody for 14 days. Later, he was sent to jail.
